How to Make Smoothies Like a Pro – Free Smoothie Tips from 5 Experts

Five of my favourite foodie bloggers and nutrition experts share their smoothie tips with you on how to make awesome smoothies, their favourite blenders, and their go-to smoothie recipes (although most found it hard to choose just one!).

Your best smoothie tips?

The secret to blending the perfect smoothie is to have the right balance of macronutrients – that is, your protein, healthy fats and carbs – to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients your body needs for optimum health + wellbeing, as well as keeping you fuller for longer.

It’s also essential to include either water or dairy-free milk – I Iove including homemade almond or macadamia milk – to help blend all the ingredients together. (Don’t miss my article on Free Smoothie Ingredients which features oat milk!)

I love my Vitamix. I’ve been using it for years.

Your favourite smoothie recipe?

There are so many too choose from. I have a whole chapter on smoothie recipes in my book Purely Delicious! For the moment, I would have to say my beauty boosting berry smoothie below. It incorporates the right balance of macronutrients, protein and goodness. This smoothie bowl is bursting with antioxidants and powerful super foods for ageless glowing skin.

Your best smoothie tips?

Try to always add one vegetable to supercharge your smoothie. There are loads of vegetables that hide really well in a smoothie – cauliflower, zucchini, sweet potato and spinach are great additions.

Your blender?

I love my Vitamix for my smoothies. It’s easy for my kids to operate (they make the smoothies in my house) and makes a super smooth blend.

Your favourite smoothie recipe?

Tough question – there are so many. I have to say I’m a sucker for a Pine Lime Splice – Blend fresh pineapple, fresh mint, spinach, coconut water and vanilla powder (with a squeeze of lime). In winter I add fresh ginger too. It’s a great flu buster.

Your best smoothie tips?

Always peel your bananas and then chop them into chunks before freezing them. It is a nightmare trying to take a peel off if you don’t!

Your blender?

Believe it or not I don’t have a blender, I use an old Sunbeam food processor that my Grandma gave me. Nothing spectacular here, but it’s loyal and makes a great smoothie for me in the morning and that’s all that matters.

Your favourite smoothie recipe?

This banana cinnamon and almond smoothie – I could have it everyday for breakfast!

Smoothie Bombs are the creation of Australian Cinzia (otherwise known as Nutrition Darling). Cinzia created the Smoothie Bombs as a solution to simplify breakfast and to encourage her 12-year-old daughter Lana to eat breakfast before going to school.

Lana now eats breakfast and helps run the Smoothie Bomb business.  Interesting fact: Before finding a manufacturer for Smoothie Bombs, they received an order from the royal family in Dubai and hand-rolled the Bombs all day every day for a whole week!

  1. Stock up on a mixture of different liquids. Our pantry is full of different types of plant milks and coconut milks
  2. Always have lots of fresh/frozen fruit and leafy greens on hand.

Your blender?

We use a NutriBullet at our home, but we also love the Thermomix! We’ve heard Breville’s Boss blender is awesome, but have yet to try it out 🙂

Our all time favourite combo is a Mango Golden Chai Smoothie using our Defender Smoothie Bomb.

Good Mix started with Blend 11 – a coconut, seeds and nut mix to blow your socks off. Jeanie worked as a naturopath in health food stores for years, and, after seeing many new muesli-like products arrive on the shelves, decided to create her own, better, ‘good mix’ to boost breakfast, with the intent to “bring the benefits of food medicine to the world”.

Smoothie starters can easily fall into the trap of making loads of ‘healthy smoothies’ & wondering why they are gaining weight.

Watch for excessive fruit sugar when starting out on smoothies – always make sure your fruity combos are balanced with some good fats, protein & fibre as well as the yummy fruity sweetness.

Otherwise, you can end up consuming way more fruit sugar in a day than you’re used to & your smoothies won’t keep you full for very long. This can lead to frustration as you wonder why you’re putting on weight after making an effort making smoothies!

Your blender?

Invest in an awesome blender (I can highly recommend the Vitamix if you have a family to feed). I finally bit the bullet & bought one (after breaking many standard blenders over a few years). This machine cops a lot of abuse that would send most blenders to the dump in minutes. It switches itself off if you’ve overloaded it to the point where it’s in danger of overheating.

Money well spent for me as it gets used at least once almost every single day, some days many times. Not just for making smoothies, but also for dips, soups, chopping veggies for sauces, coleslaws, making flours etc…anything you need to chop / blend / grind down, it handles. 

Your favourite smoothie recipe?

Have a ‘quick & easy smoothie standby’ – one you can whip up in minutes, that everyone in the house enjoys & that you always have the ingredients for. Here’s my fave ‘standby smoothie’!

  • 1/2 cup of Pure n Free coconut yoghurt (natural unsweetened or chocolate mousse for extra sweetness)
  • 1/2 cup of natural greek yoghurt (I use Five:Am or Jalna)
  • 1-2 ripe bananas (2 = sweeter, 1 = less sweet)
  • 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries (or strawberries / mixed berries)
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 2-3 heaped tablespoons of activated goodMix blend11.
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of protein powder (I love 180 Nutrition
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of raw cacao powder
  • 1-2 flat tsp of cinnamon 
  • Good dash of vanilla essence
  • A little water if needed to assist the blending process

Add all ingredients to your blender & blend on high until thick & smooth & yummy!

This will keep everyone full & energised for hours – plenty of good fats, protein & fibre to slow the absorption of sugars, make for a super-nutritious start to the day!
